About Depot Renovation Inc.
The Illinois Central Railroad Depot and railyard complex in Cherokee Iowa were
listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Despite this
recognition, the Depot was left unattended - likely to be demolished. Concerned
local citizens began discussions to save the Depot in June of 1990.
Depot Renovation, Inc., a nonprofit tax exempt corporation, was formed by
volunteers in 1991. The group successfuly raised funds and purchased the depot
complex in 1991.
Along with support from volunteers an local citizens of Cherokee, the projects
accomplished on the Cherokee depot.
- New gas, water & sewer lines
- New sidewalks
- New roof
- Complete electrical re-wiring
- Installation of furnaces and air conditioning
- New insulation and sheetrock
- Aquisition & display of ICRR caboose & Wilson refrigerated freight car
- Completion of underground water dispersal system for use with canopy
- Re-laying of brick pavers
- Rehabilitation of first floor
- Reconstruction of the canopy
- Re-pointing of mortar
- Repair of gutters
- Design & Construction of HO scale model railroad
- Rehabilitation of the second floor
- Achievement of handicapped accessibility to the depot
- Opening of gift shop inside the depot
- Stabilzation of the adjoining Express building
